FORGET TAVERNA WINE
JOIN US ON THIS CONNOISEUR’S DELIGHT
For too long Greek wine has had a bad ‘rep’ which is totally undeserved. Now the time has come to re-evaluate Greek wines. Forget Greek taverna wine, we’re talking about the Premier Cru of Hellenic wines. Cuvees that you never see, simply because they never leave Greece. (Greek connoisseurs drink them all). Bottles that, if you can find them in a wine shop., cost upwards of 30 or 40 euro.
A TUTORED TASTING BY A TRUE INDUSTRY GREAT
Don’t take our word for it because the man who has put this cruise together, the palate that has selected the wineries, the wines, the wine-pairings at supper and the vintages, is none other than Tim Clarke. Tim is rightly a legend when it comes to Greek wines. A true guru of Hellenic viticulture, Tim and his wife Lynette Arblaster have been champions of the ‘oenology’ of Greek winemaking on both the mainland and the islands for more than 30 years.
A GASTRONOMIC EXTRAVAGANZA
On this tutored cruise Tim covers Greek winemaking from the classical age through to the present day. He will take you to wine estates for tastings and lunch. He will discuss differences between soils on the islands and the mainland, and the grape varieties which thrive there. He will identify the differentiating factors of wine production and how that has changed. It’s a learning experience that tastes divine.
A FEAST OF WINES
To embark on this journey of exploration, you need to be prepared for the fact that every day you will taste multiple wines. There will be tastings in the morning, tastings over lunch, tastings most afternoons and paired tastings with food at dinner. Tim has also worked with our master chef to ensure the food matches the wines he has chosen to offer.
WHAT’S ON TIM’S WINE LIST?
Day-by-day, here is what you can expect:
Day 1 Athens, Marina Zeas (Piraeus) - Hydra
Embark Athens with on-boarding sparkling wine then the first of our dinners with paired-wine tastings. Tonight, food and wines from the Ionian region
Day 2 Nafplio - Nemea
A classical start to the day with an optional visit to Mycenae. Then it’s on to Gaia winery at Nemea – the leading red wine producer in Greece. Lunch at Semeli is accompanied by wines from Nemea and Mantineia. Tonight’s dinner pairs food and wine specialities from the Peloponnese
Day 3 Monemvasia
The wines of Monemvasia have long been famous due to its Malvasia (or Malmsey) vintages. Tonight, we invite the Tsimbidis family who own Monemvasia winery to share dinner with us.
Day 4 Milos
Morning at leisure on tiny Milos followed by a village taverna lunch with local wines. We don’t get as far as Crete on this voyage, but this evening we have a dinner tasting of Imery wines, the finest vintages from the island.
Day 5 Santorini
The volcanic mineral-rich soils of Santorini have long been famous as one of the top white wine producing areas of the Hellenic pantheon. Our destination today is Argyros winery which makes some of the island’s finest whites. Over dinner we’ll taste more wines from Santorini.
Day 6 Samos - Fourni
A full-on wine day on Samos at Vakakis winery, lunch with more Samian wines from the Platanos estate then an afternoon at leisure in rarely visited Fourini. Dinner this evening with wines from Chios and Ikaria.
Day 7 Tinos - Karystos
Tinos is a holy island with over 700 churches. It’s also home to the emerging star winery called Volacus. Focus of today’s tasting. Later we sail to Karystos on Evia island. Tonight is the Captain’s farewell dinner
Day 8 Athens - Marina Zeas (Piraeus)
Disembarkation at Athens with the option of going on to a tasting and lunch at the nearby Kotos Estate before transfer to Athens airport.
